As the weather heats up, we remind you that children find a swimming pool very enticing.
Please Shut the Gate.
Statistically, on average, 10 children under the age of 5 drown in Queensland each year. An Average of 5 children aged 5-17 years drown each year.
Reliance on pool fences alone is simply not enough to prevent children accessing pools. Children can be extremely creative in getting into a swimming pool area, so please be vigilant.
An accident is just that, but if we can spread the word, and remind everyone every day of the dangers of children gaining access to a swimming pool unsupervised, then perhaps we might just save a life.
helpful Hints :
Remove toys from in and around the pool area to reduce the temptation for children to gain access to the pool
Have a safe play area for children away from pools or other water hazards
Never leave children unsupervised around the pool area
Don't allow the use of flotation devices to replace the need for active adult supervision
In a party / entertaining situation, don't just assume someone else is watching the kids
Never leave the pool gate propped open
Remove any nearby objects that children might use to climb onto, to open the gate
